It’s four months since the lock-down began in the UK, and it feels like years since life was “normal”! I wonder what your reflections are – and whether your happiness is “lasting” or otherwise? Here are some of my thoughts…
Humbling
It has struck me as supremely ironic that such a small organism (just a strand of RNA with a protein coat – that’s it!) can reduce the global human population to paralysis and fear. With all our advanced technology and cultural development, we are still utterly vulnerable to this little microbe! There’s something very humbling about that.
Taking for granted
The result is that much of what we take for granted is curtailed, if not eliminated (at least put on hold). In terms of the diagram I use in Lasting Happiness, health, wealth and pleasure have all been severely damaged in just a few weeks.
But it’s not just those things on the left-hand side. Relationships and community have taken a massive battering too. Social distancing and the limitation of human touch have had a devastating effect on our mental and emotional health. And the question of meaning has come to the forefront – what is life all about anyway?
Silver linings
So, here are two aspects of silver lining. Especially when our horizons were forcibly reduced to our homes, with brief daily ventures to the park, many of us came to value the good things that we so often took for granted. And I for one came to appreciate the simple things of life – especially in nature, since the warm UK spring brought huge gratitude for trees and flowers and birds.
Secondly, as so often happens when the comforts we assume will always be there are removed, many people have been reassessing what their lives are about, asking questions that normally don’t surface above the business of the day. What’s it all about? What should I put my trust in? Who do I turn to?
Launching Lasting Happiness
So, it felt to me as if launching the Lasting Happiness course was a timely act. I hope you agree….
What’s the Lasting Happiness course, I hear you say. Here’s where to find out:
