Happiness – The Next Steps
The first course encourages us to reflect more deeply on our lives, to reassess our direction and plan constructive ways forward – in other words, to grow in happiness and wellbeing!
Taking all that as its starting point, the Intermediate Course, “Happiness – the Next Steps”, picks up each initial theme and moves it on. So “The Happy Life” now becomes “The Unstressed Life”, “The Successful Life” becomes “The Well-lived Life”, and so on.
1. “In Control – or Out of Control?” (The Unstressed Life)
We unpack the three levels of happiness (Pleasure, Engagement and Meaning) to show how each level works. What is helpful about them and how can we all deepen our happiness? Stress is the great happiness-buster, so what can we do to relieve stress in our lives?
2. “Frustrated – or Fulfilled?” (The Well-lived Life)
Can I find success in the whole of my life, not just the physical and material? What does such ‘whole-of-life’ living look like? Will I look back on my life in the future and conclude that it was fruitful? Why does gratitude have such amazing power? And can I manage to live my life according to my key priorities?
3. “Communication or Conflict?” (The Harmonious Life)
What are the ingredients for a healthy relationship? What are the barriers? How do I communicate more effectively? Why is listening so powerful? Can I bring balance to my strained relationships?
4. “There must be more to life than this!” (The Deeper Life)
We’re often in such a hurry that we don’t discover the deeper keys to life. So we end the course by exploring what it means to live out a full and whole life, and how we can find fulfillment for the longings within. Finally we discover how to set the direction for the rest of your life!

Here are the reflections of one community leader who recently hosted the course…
We’ve run two “Happiness Courses” so far. People enjoyed the course and got a lot out of it. Happiness is something that is relevant and attractive to everyone, regardless of age and background. What’s particularly exciting about the material is that the research on which the course is based is providing scientific confirmation of a significant number of areas that are central to living, such as the importance of gratitude and forgiveness; the key role of relationships; the impact of having meaning and purpose beyond oneself.
The course itself has a good balance between the impartation of information; opportunities to participate in exercises; discussion; and guidance for following up outside the confines of the course evenings themselves. This balance means that people from a wide diversity of backgrounds have been able to feel engaged, and people have the option to take it as seriously (or not) as they wish.
Although it’s early days, my view is that at the very least, running the Happiness course is a way of helping people to live richer, happier lives.
