Tell me again – what’s it about?
We live in a hectic, stressed-out world, with mental health problems at epidemic proportions. Covid-19 has only made things worse, leaving many people searching desperately for a way forward.
But the challenges are not just mental or emotional. We face pressures in every part of our lives, from the physical and emotional to the relational and spiritual. That’s pretty comprehensive, but often our responses can be anecdotal – we tackle problems in one arena, only to face others in very different parts of life. Instead of living joined-up lives, we find them compartmentalised and fragmented.

So, we need to take a step back
…and review the whole of our lives. All domains of life are important and deserve proper attention. But more than that, they are interconnected, for like an airbed, pressure on one area affects all the others. For example, our emotional state impacts our physical health, and the condition of our relationships shapes every sphere – physical, mental and spiritual. That’s not surprising, since we are whole human beings, not an assortment of disconnected parts – although that is often how we live our lives.
The Well Person course
The Well Person course takes a wholistic approach to wellbeing, based on these principles. In six sessions, it explores the individual parts of our lives (physical, mental/emotional, relational and spiritual), investigating those things that make for wellness or unwellness.
But it also seeks to draw all the parts together, to find out how we can live joined-up lives and discover what might be called wholistic wellbeing. The language used is not technical, but the principles are both profound and practical.
The sessions
The aim of the course is to encourage us all to reflect on our lives – both the different, distinct parts, and our lives as-a-whole. We ask some questions: how are we doing; where are we experiencing both wellbeing and unwellness; and what might be the way forward?
Each session consists of short presentations, with plenty of time for both individual reflection and discussion in small groups. No one is required to share more than they are comfortable with, and confidentiality is especially emphasised – what is shared in the course stays in the course. This approach has proved successful over many years with other courses, such as The Happiness Course.
Nuts and bolts
The course is interactive, practical and enjoyable.
